People are being urged to back Islamic Relief in its efforts to get
humanitarian assistance to the people living in a troubled region which
has seen recent violence in Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia. Our Middle East
and North Africa appeal, launched today, comes as violence in Libya
escalates.
Saleh Saaed, CEO of Islamic Relief Worldwide, said: “It is currently
extremely difficult to assess the full humanitarian impact of the
violence in Libya. Media access to the country is restricted and few
international NGOs currently work in the country.
“However, Islamic Relief has been able to respond swiftly from
neighbouring Egypt, where we have been working for more than a decade.
We have deployed a team to the border between Egypt and Libya. Our first
priority is to accurately assess the humanitarian needs, and provide
emergency assistance by way of medical services, food, and shelter.”
Islamic Relief’s emergency appeal for the Middle East and North
Africa region currently includes humanitarian support for Libyans and
Egyptians, as well as development projects in Egypt. We are also
considering humanitarian needs in Tunisia.
We have a number of established offices across the region in Egypt,
Yemen, occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan, and
have completed a variety of development projects, benefiting thousands
of people.
Islamic Relief is closely monitoring the situation across the region
and making the necessary preparations to respond to any urgent
humanitarian needs. We hope to expand our development activities in the
region.
