Aisha’s story
10 February 2012

Aisha has been living in the Korsan camp for over a year

Aisha’s story

Aisha Barsane Mohamed, 28, has three children - two sons aged 13 and 8, and a nine-year-old daughter. Aisha and her children left their home in Basra village in the Lower Shabelle region seven months ago. They have been living in Korsan camp near Mogadishu ever since.

When Aisha left her home she said the family’s health was so poor that they could have died. Her children were malnourished and she had become extremely thin.

Aisha was heavily pregnant when she arrived in Mogadishu. She gave birth to a baby boy who lived for just two weeks. She had not even given him a name when he died.

“I was sick and my baby died because of the sickness he was born with,” Aisha said.
“Now my baby has been buried inside the camp,” she said as she points her finger north of the camp, where many children are buried, and where many of the IDPs live.

When asked if she would stay in the camp, Aisha said that she would return home when the situation improves.
